From the Alps to the West End: A Swiss Journey Through Time and Why You Should See “Valchera’s”
A Glimpse into the Past
The Swiss Benevolent Society (SBS) was founded in 1703 to support Swiss nationals living in London. In those early days, many Swiss immigrants came to the UK as au pairs, seeking opportunities to learn English and experience a new culture. The SBS was there to provide a helping hand, offering support and advice to these young people as they navigated life in a foreign land. Find out more about SBS rich history here.
Connecting with Our Roots
The upcoming play, “Valchera’s,” offers a unique opportunity to connect with our history and heritage. Set in early 1900s London, the play tells the story of two women, Iride and Tina, who are navigating the challenges of life as immigrants. Valchera’s is an exciting new play commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Unione Ticinese, one of the UK’s oldest Swiss associations. Premiering at The Cockpit in Marylebone (NW8 8EH) from 30 October to 2 November 2024, the play brings to life in London a poignant and provocative story of emigration, courage, and friendship.
Picture 1900s London, on the cusp of war. At a lavish table in Valchera’s restaurant, two women sit in disheveled wedding gowns. Meet Iride, an emigrant from the depths of the Swiss Alps with a mysterious past, and Tina, a headstrong restaurateur born to Swiss-Italian parents. In the kitchen, we hear a man pleading from inside a lobster cage. The room is heavy with decisions, betrayals, and the looming threat of war. Will they let him live, or is the past too heavy to forgive?
At its heart, Valchera’s is about resilience, identity, and the strength required to navigate new beginnings in a foreign land. With themes that resonate today as much as they did over a century ago, the play is a compelling exploration of the choices we must make to survive. It’s a celebration of the courage and resilience it takes to forge our own paths. Don’t miss this bold and thought-provoking production! Book your tickets today to experience a story that transcends time and borders.
