Holding the Line: Your Wellbeing Matters Amidst the Cost of Living Crisis
Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025The UK’s cost-of-living challenges are real, with rising prices and legislative changes impacting many. But remember, you are not alone. Support is available in many forms, and by focusing on practical coping skills, we can navigate these times together.
Let’s acknowledge the facts. Inflation has squeezed budgets, and shifting legislation, like changes to tax residency rules, can add financial burdens. It’s understandable to feel the weight of these pressures. However, even amidst these challenges, we can take control of our wellbeing and build a strong support network.
This financial strain affects our mental and physical health. It’s okay to feel anxious or overwhelmed. But by taking proactive steps, we can nurture our wellbeing and build a community of support.
Recent Welfare System Changes:
The government has recently announced significant changes to the welfare system with the stated aim of supporting more people into work. These reforms include key changes such as the planned removal of the Work Capability Assessment and the introduction of improved employment support. While the goal of increasing employment is commendable, it’s crucial to acknowledge that these changes will have complex and varied impacts. For instance, many vulnerable individuals who rely on essential benefits, such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP), to manage their disabilities and health conditions may face significant challenges and increased uncertainty. The government plans to link PIP assessments more closely to employment support. This could mean some people who currently receive PIP may be reassessed with a greater focus on their ability to work, rather than solely on their daily living and mobility needs.
Example:
Imagine someone who currently receives the enhanced rate of PIP for daily living, which is £108.55 per week, because they need significant help with tasks like preparing food and managing medication. Under the proposed changes, if their reassessment focuses more on their potential to engage in work-related activities, and they are deemed capable of some form of work (even if it’s part-time or supported), they could potentially see a reduction or removal of their PIP entitlement. This change could cause significant financial hardship, as they may still require the same level of support for their daily living needs, but with reduced financial assistance. In times when the system may fall short, the Swiss Benevolent Society is here to help through our regular means-tested financial aid.
Disclaimer: Please be aware that the exact implementation and impact of these changes are still developing, and this example is for illustrative purposes. It is always important to check official government resources for the most up-to-date information.
